🎙 Works with the £15 recorder in your drawer

Voice notes that sort themselves. No gadget. No subscription. No cloud.

Record on any cheap USB voice recorder, or just talk into your phone. Clionote transcribes it, works out what it is, writes the summary, pulls out the action items and tags it. All on your own device. £4.99, once.

Clionote notes list on Android, showing transcribed and tagged voice notes

Three things we skipped on purpose

The AI recorder crowd wants to sell you a device, then a plan, then keep your audio on their servers. We went the other way.

How it works

Three steps. No setup wizard, no account, no pairing.

Step 1

Record on whatever's nearest

A cheap USB voice recorder from the drawer, or the Live Dictate button in the app. If it makes a WAV file, Clionote can read it.

Step 2

Plug in, tap once

Connect the recorder to your phone or PC and hit Transcribe and Interpret. Every new recording on the drive gets transcribed and summarised in one go. Already-done notes are skipped.

Step 3

Read the summary, not the ramble

Each note gets a title, a summary and its action items, sorted as a meeting, personal note, instructions or general. Tagged, searchable, and ready to chat with.

Everything a voice note needs

Capture on whatever's closest. Let the app do the tidying.

Transcription that stays on your phone

Whisper speech-to-text, downloaded once and run entirely on your device. No upload, no minutes cap, and it works on a plane.

Summaries that know what they're reading

A meeting gets decisions and action items. A shopping list stays a shopping list. Every note is classified first, then summarised the right way, with a title written for you and tags suggested from the ones you already use.

Chat with your notes

"What did we agree about the pricing?" Ask in plain English and get an answer grounded in the actual transcript. Chat with one note, a selection, everything pinned, or every note matching your current search.

Listen back, then fix it

Every note keeps its recording. Play it back in the app, and if the transcript missed something, hit Retranscribe with the quiet recording or background noise setting flipped on.

Tags and a pinboard

Colour-coded tags you define, one-tap filters, and a pinboard for the notes you keep coming back to. Same tags, same pins on the phone and the Windows app.

Urgent Meetings Ideas Personal

Live Dictate

No recorder to hand? Tap the mic, talk, and watch the words appear. Uses your phone's own on-device speech recognition, so nothing leaves the handset. The screen stays awake while you ramble.

Needs Android 13 or newer.

Four languages

Transcribes English, French, Spanish and German out of the box.

Go fully offline, if you want

Flip one switch and the AI runs on your phone too, using Google's Gemma 3n. Not as sharp as GPT or Claude, but free forever and it never leaves the handset. Or plug in your own OpenAI or Anthropic key for cloud-quality answers, billed by them, not us.

Local model is a one-time 3.4 GB or 4.6 GB download. 6 GB+ RAM recommended.

Android and Windows, one set of notes

The Windows app is included and reads the same notes off the same drive. Transcribe on the phone, tidy up on the big screen. Unplug the drive and the phone keeps a local copy so your notes are always there.

Clionote vs the AI recorder gadgets

Plaud, Pocket and friends make nice hardware. You just shouldn't need to buy it, or pay rent on it, to get a decent summary of your own voice.

Bring your own recorder

Clionote isn't tied to any hardware and doesn't sell any. It's built for the cheap, generic voice recorders millions of people already own.

  • Any USB recorder that shows up as a plain drive and saves WAV files
  • No pairing, no drivers, no manufacturer app
  • Plugs into your phone (a USB-C adapter may be needed) or straight into the PC
  • Or skip the recorder entirely and use Live Dictate
The one real requirement: the recorder has to save plain .wav files to its USB drive. No MP3, no proprietary formats. If it does that, this will work.
A generic USB voice recorder held in a hand

Just an example, not a specific product. Any plain USB voice recorder like this works.

Generic USB voice recorders
Any brand, as long as it stores .wav files on a USB drive
